What would you do with your fifth day?

We are very excited to tell you more about the 4-day teaching week that we will be offering every Year 12 student in September 2020. The Sixth Form will still be open every day for students but students will have one day without any timetabled lessons. This flexible timetable will provide an opportunity on day 5 for students to undertake regular work experience, volunteering, private study and much more.

How the students spend their day 5 will be largely up to them, but we hope it will also be powerful in supporting a positive work-life balance and well-being. We will be working in partnership with Career Ready to link with local and national employers. We will be the only Sixth Form locally to be working with the Career Ready organisation which is a well-established UK wide charity that provides young people with the opportunity to develop their employability skills and attitudes. I would encourage you to click on the link to read the Career Ready impact report for 2019: careerready.org.uk/resource/career-ready-impact-report-2019. This document provides an overview of the organisation, the impact this is having on shaping young peoples' lives and the many career opportunities available. Taking part in this programme will be optional and students will be able to register their interest in October and the launch will be in November - students will then be matched with their own industry mentor. The student will first meet their mentor in January in an ice-breaking workshop, by this time we hope that face-to-face meetings will be possible, and monthly mentoring meetings will then take place for the rest of the year - usually at the mentor's place of work. Throughout the year all students participating in the programme will attend Master classes and work place visits. Work experience will be an integral part of the programme and the students will be able to use 'day 5' for this over a period of time, summer holiday internships are also possible. There is no cost to the student to take part in the programme and some work experience placements / internships students will be paid and / or travel costs covered.
