Key Stage 3

 

The outline for Physical Education at Key Stage 3 is aimed to develop flexibility and personalised learning. The KS3 curriculum is based around four key concepts:

Competence

• Performance

• Creativity

• Healthy Active Lifestyles

It is important that the children gain an in depth understanding of how these concepts can help to develop their knowledge and understanding within a variety of activity areas.

The children get a wide choice of activities, which have been grouped under the following themes:

• Outwitting Opponents – e.g. Football, Netball, Gaelic Football, Badminton
• Accurate Replication of Actions – e.g. Dance, Gymnastics
• Exploring and Communicating Ideas – e.g. Dance
• Performing at maximum speeds – e.g. Athletics
• Identifying and solving problems – e.g. Outdoor and Adventurous Activities
• Exercising safely and effectively – e.g. Fitness and Health Activities

They choose four activities to follow during the year. This allows for sufficient depth of teaching and allows the teacher flexibility to mould their scheme of work around the children they are working with.

To be successful all pupils need to be able to:

• Develop skills in physical activity
• Make and apply decisions
• Develop physical and mental capacity
• Evaluate and improve
• Make informed choices about healthy active lifestyles

The use of ICT is also actively encouraged through the use of video analysis. All children get the opportunity to use hand held cameras to videos each others performance so that they can set targets for improvement.

Key Stage 4

The emphasis at KS4 is for greater depth of understanding. Pupils are also encouraged to undertake a variety of roles such as coach, equipment manager, analyst, official and choreographer.

Pupils can opt for two forms of accreditation through either the Sports Leaders UK level 1 course or the AQA GCSE PE course. Sports leaders develop a range of skills to compliment their academic progress. Leaders learn how to plan, organise, communicate and reflect upon their leadership development. They have the opportunity to work with children from our feeder primary schools and help to organise sports festivals held at St. Alban’s.

Pupils choosing GCSE PE can now gain a double award and develop a wide range of skills. They must show both sporting and academic excellence to succeed and can now be assessed in a variety of roles such as performer, official, coach, leader and choreographer. They also have to learn how to analyse performance and discuss this in detail to show the link between the theory and practical aspects of the course.

The knowledge of a variety of sports requires pupils to understand more complicated strategies and tactics. They also develop a greater understanding of the impact of fitness and exercise training on their wider health and well being.

Key stage 4 pupils gain access to the schools new fitness suite. It includes state of the art cardio vascular and resistance equipment from Life Fitness. They are able to use this facility both during lessons and in their own time. Organised sessions are available during lunchtimes and after school.

Key Stage 5

A Level Physical Education is the stepping stone into the world of Sport Science. Candidates are required to demonstrate a wide variety of skills to be successful on this course.

The course is split by 60% theoretical content and 40% practical coursework. In theory lessons knowledge of applied anatomy and physiology develops on from GCSE PE. Pupils also discover a variety of topics to study such as skill acquisition, and contemporary issues surrounding the sport and leisure industry.

During practical work only one sport is required for assessment. However candidates are required to demonstrate their ability in two of three areas – coaching, performance and/or officiating. At the end of the course all practical work is externally moderated during practical moderation which may take place at another local school.
