Student Support

St. Alban’s School has a strong Pastoral Team of teaching and non-teaching staff that are dedicated to providing the best possible pastoral support for our students. They offer a support network throughout the school, allowing your child to share their concerns and worries. The roles involved in our team include:

Student Support Managers (Key Stage 3, 4 & 5)
School Chaplain
Behaviour Support Assistant
Safeguarding Officer
Special Educational Needs Coordinator
School Attendance Officer

The Safeguarding of our students is extremely important to us. Mrs. Gilson is the senior designated person. You are able to contact her directly through the school if you have any concerns.

We encourage parents to keep in regular contact with the school regarding any concerns. In the first instance, please contact your child’s form tutor who will involve the student support manager if necessary.

Pupil Premium Funding

There are categories of pupils with schools who are deemed at risk of underachieving. Examples of this are pupils who are entitled to free school meals, are looked after by the Local Authority in Care or are members of a family of an Armed Service Parent so are likely to have a disrupted education through moving.
In 2011-12 the school received £25684. This was spent on activities and staffing. Examples of this are:

> The Avenues programme
> Additional Teaching Assistant time
> Development of Parental Engagement programmes such as The Virtual Learning Environment(VLE)

Context
The profile of students in St Alban’s High School for whom the school receives the pupil premium are:
> 7.0% of pupils in the school receive Free School Meals
> 0.2% of pupils in the school are Looked After
> 11.2% of pupils in the school have received Free School Meals in one or more of the previous 6 years (Ever 6)
> 0.5% of pupils in the school are from Service Families

The Government believes that the pupil premium, which in addition to main school funding, is the best way to address the current underlying inequalities between children eligible for free school meals (FSM) and their wealthier peers by ensuring that funding to tackle disadvantage reaches the pupils who need it most.

National research shows that children who have been eligible for Free School Meals at any point in their school career have consistently lower educational attainment than those who have never been eligible.
Schools, headteachers and teachers will decide how to use the Pupil Premium allocation, as they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for individual pupils.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

We know that good teaching can, and does, narrow gaps in attainment. To improve outcomes for learners vulnerable to under achievement the most effective schools develop personalised provision that is linked to effective planning, good specialist pedagogy, good day-to-day assessment, and appropriate and timely intervention.
The intelligent use of tracking data enables schools to identify underperforming pupils and to then target intervention and support to promote accelerate progress towards age-related expectations.

Funding

In 2012-13 – We will receive £79,433 pupil premium from the EFA

£800 was paid from the SCC for the looked after children

Deployment

At St Alban’s High School we strive to provide an excellent education for all of our students within a caring Christian community where all are respected, valued and supported to achieve their potential. We aim to inspire everyone with the strength and purpose to begin the journey of learning for life and to prepare our students to lead by their example in the modern world. We appreciate that sometimes it is necessary to withdraw pupils and provide individual support but wherever possible we seek to develop provision within the classroom through effective planning, good specialist pedagogy, day to day assessment and target setting and appropriate and timely intervention

Impact

As a result of the data tracking there are interventions in place for those students who are not making the expected progress. The tracking systems are currently being developed and refined and it is expected that these will provide a valuable tool to monitor all pupils and will lead to additional intervention for those who require it.

The monitoring reviews, which focus on such key areas as behaviour, engagement, use of questioning, effective starters and plenaries continues to raise the expectations of both the teachers and pupils, whilst providing constructive feedback.

The appointment of a Behaviour Assistant has resulted in a large number of issues being dealt with very quickly and effectively which has resulted in an improvement in the behaviour of individuals across the school.
