GENERAL DETAILS for CANDIDATES
St. Alban’s Catholic High School principally serves the Ipswich Deanery, which includes Ipswich and South Suffolk. It is situated in a very pleasant residential area of Ipswich and is well served by transport links. It is the only denominational secondary school in the maintained sector in south Suffolk. As such, it attracts strong interest not just from the Catholic community but also from other denominations. The admissions policy is based upon denominational criteria and our intake represents the typical ‘bell-shaped curve’ of a comprehensive school.
St. Alban’s is a co-educational, all-ability, 11-18 school with 998 pupils on roll. Significant expansion programmes have enabled the school to provide dedicated facilities for specialised teaching, including the most recent development opened in 2010 for PE. The main school building has had a refurbishment that together with integrated ICT facilities now provides quality teaching accommodation.
The school enjoys a very strong reputation with recent 'Outstanding' OFSTED inspections the latest being in 2009, and has been identified in Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Schools’ Annual Report in 1996/97 and in 2002/03. The school was recognised as a successful school providing high-quality education and achieving excellent standards. These accolades reflect the school’s successful implementation of several school improvement initiatives and the drive to continue to improve standards. Examination results and progress have been consistently good.
Our OfSTED inspection report published in December 2009 described the school as 'Outstanding'.
The full report can be found on the OFSTED website, or on the OFSTED link on the website frontpage.
The school benefits from the active support of both the Diocese of East Anglia and Suffolk Education Authority. It has been pro active in local educational networks. Overall, the school has made significant progress in recent years and is well placed to move forward into a new phase of successful further development.
